The office of the Attorney General today held a validation exercise of its Performance Contract for financial year 2024/25 with the Deputy Chief of Staff in the executive office of the President in charge of Performance and Delivery Management Mr. Eliud Owalo.
The office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice is mandated to:
1) Provide legal services to the Government and the Public;
2) Represent the National Government in civil proceedings and other matters before courts and tribunals (both local and foreign);
3) Promote the rule of law and protect public interest;
4) Promote and protect human rights;
5) Promote good governance, transparency, accountability, ethics and integrity;
6) Facilitate implementation of the Constitution;
7) Facilitate Policy, Legal, and institutional reforms in the administration of Justice, electoral reforms, legal education and the legal profession;
8) Provide National Registration Services for Marriages, Societies, Coat of Arms and Adoptions;
9) Enhance access to justice through the provision of Legal Aid; and
10) Overseeing legal matters pertaining to Estates and Trusts.
At the meeting held at the Attorney General’s Boardroom, the Hon. Attorney General Dorcas Oduor flanked by the various heads of technical departments shared on the progress achieved in the implementation of directives arising from the 2nd National Executive Retreat in Naivasha whose theme was on ‘Building Momentum for Better Service Delivery”.
In these directives, the State Law Office jointly with the Public Service Commission was to finalise on the recruitment, selection and deployment of State Counsels to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as the Counties. Similarly, the State Law Office was to work jointly with the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy to develop a robust electronic Case Management System.
The Hon. AG promised to strengthen the provision of legal services in support of the Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda (BETA), the Kenya vision 2030 and other national priorities. Other strategic intents that will be fulfilled include enhancing adherence to the rule of law and facilitating the enactment of relevant laws and regulations.
