FIDA-Kenya Chairperson Christine Kungu, Executive Director Ms. Anne Ireri and other FIDA representatives paid a courtesy call to the Attorney General Hon. Dorcas Oduor in her office on Thursday, September 26, 2024.The officials congratulated Ms. Oduor on her appointment as the first woman Attorney General in the Republic of Kenya. Hon. Shadrack Mose, the Solicitor General, and some members of staff from the Office of the Attorney General and of Justice’s were in attendance.
Federation of Women Lawyers–Kenya (FIDA Kenya) is a non-profit women’s membership organization that offers free legal aid to women and their children. FIDA-Kenya has handled litigation on custody and maintenance matters, land and matrimonial property disputes, labor and economic rights, participated in advocacy around women in political participation, Sexual Reproductive Health Rights, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Child and Forced Marriage, Sexual abuse etc.
During the visit, the officials discussed potential areas of collaboration with the Attorney General’s office in improving access to justice for women, girls and the vulnerable groups. They also explored strategies of advancing legal and policy reforms for the rights of women and girls in Kenya. FIDA leadership also promised to collaborate with National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) by creating awareness that (NLAS) also offers free legal aid service, they also pledged to support the office of the Attorney General by providing training and capacity building to enhance efficient and effective service delivery. The Attorney General stressed the need of having NLAS to be decentralized to all counties to reach to all wananchi.
