‘PRESS STATEMENT ON THE LAUNCH OF NAIROBI PRIMARY AS A MARRIAGE REGISTRATION AREA BY CAS MADAM WINNIE GUCHU

The Office of the Attorney General has officially launched and opened the Nairobi Primary School as a Gazzetted marriage registration center. This follows the backlog caused in its existing marriage offices due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On the 10th day of July, 2020, the office launched an online platform for registration of marriage i.e. oag.ecitizen.go.ke. Since its launch, there has been an upsurge in the number of marriage applications hence the need to devise more modern ways to enhance efficiency.
The launch of Nairobi Primary School as a marriage processing center will not only ease the interruption of services caused by the Covid-19 pandemic but also ensure crowd control in compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines on social distancing. The venue was gazetted as a vide Legal Notice No. 6597 dated 4th September, 2020 and is to serve as a marriage registration area for three (3) months, namely: September, October and November.
As a marriage registration area, the school shall have two (2) marriage points with two (2) Registrars performing a total of twenty (20) marriages per day, bringing the total to sixty (60) marriages each week. Moreover, all marriages will be officiated in open air in order to reduce the risk of corona virus exposure between AG officers and members of the public.
To further ensure customer satisfaction, the marriage area shall have two (2) photoshoot areas, four (4) signage points, flowers, handwashing stations, security officers for crowd control, changing rooms, waiting areas among other facilities.
The center will handle civil Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Customary marriages and Kenyans are encouraged to register their marriages and obtain marriage certificates that The Office of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice wishes to urge those that that are married through customary rituals, to take advantage of the law and register their unions with the Registrar of Marriages.
